Pamir Highway
JULY 23 - AUG. 01, 2027
The Paper Highway - certainly one of the greatest adventures still to be found on the planet
This route is the ultimate challenge in all of Central Asia. What sets this route apart is that it combines the classic highlights of the Pamir Highway with authentic, remote off-road adventures.
Most standard tours go directly from Langar over the Khargush Pass to Alichur or Murghab. Our route, however, takes the detour through the Zorkul Nature Reserve, past Lake Zorkul, to Jarty Gumbez.
This is one of the most unspoiled, remote, and scenically spectacular corners of the Pamir: We drive right along the border with Afghanistan (the Wakhan Corridor) and see landscapes…
… that ordinary tourists never get to see!
The adventure begins in Dushanbe:
To kick off this real expedition, we'll meet in Dushanbe at DYU International Airport. The altitude is perfect for acclimatizing over the next few days.
And for everything that follows, please refer to the detailed itinerary below.
Our emergency vehicles on site will include Toyota Land Cruiser 100/200, as well as Prados or comparable Lexus models.
The accommodations are always the best the region has to offer. But be prepared for the fact that you certainly won't be enjoying a view of the Hindu Kush from a 5-star hotel.
Day 1 • 23.07.2027
Dushanbe Tavildara Mountain Passes Kalaikhumb
The day begins: Frühe Abfahrt aus Duschanbe. Early departure from Dushanbe. Instead of taking the standard southern route through Kulob, we take the more adventurous northern road through Vahdat – Obigarm – Tavildara – mountain passes – Kalaikhumb.
This route offers significantly more mountain driving and unpaved sections and is ideal for guests looking for a real 4×4 experience.
Distance: approximately 290–310 km
Driving time: approximately 8–10 hours
Overnight altitude: around 1,200 m
Road surface: approximately 190 km paved or old asphalt and around 100–120 km of gravel, rough mountain road and damaged sections.
Lunch: pre-arranged hot lunch in Tavildara, including soup, main course, salad, bread, tea and coffee.
Dinner: restaurant at the hotel in Kalaikhumb.

Driving time: approximately 7–9 hours
Road surface: approximately 150 km of paved or hard surface and around 90–100 km of rough, damaged, gravel or construction sections. Because this road is currently being reconstructed, the amount of asphalt may increase considerably by July 2027.

Langar Khargush Zorkul Nature Reserve Jarty GumbezLangar
This is the main off-road day of the expedition: From Langar, we climb toward Khargush and then leave the usual tourist route to enter the remote Zorkul Nature Reserve.
We continue through wild high-altitude scenery toward Lake Zorkul, located at more than 4,000 metres above sea level.
After visiting the lake, we continue along remote 4×4 tracks toward Jarty Gumbez.
There are virtually no normal roads, restaurants or shops in this region. This is a very remote location, so there are no luxury hotels. Accommodation is simple but authentic, and the natural hot spring is one of the highlights of the location.

Driving time: approximately 7–9 hours
Road surface: approximately 140–155 km of gravel, stones, sand, rough tracks and genuine 4×4 terrain. Asphalt is almost nonexistent.

Day 10 • 01.08.2027

Latest information
Important Information for Guests from the U.S. / Guests from the EU:
- GBAO Permit (Required): Since the entire route passes through the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), U.S. visitors must be sure to check the box for the “GBAO Permit” when applying for an e-visa (additional fee of approximately 20 USD). Without this permit, travelers will be turned away at the numerous checkpoints along the Pamir Highway.
- Zorkul Additional Permit (Day 5): The standard GBAO permit is not sufficient for the Zorkul Nature Reserve. Since the reserve is located directly on the sensitive border, the tour operator must obtain a separate Zorkul supplementary permit well in advance through the authorities in Dushanbe or the tourism organization PECTA in Khorog.
Travel Warnings from the U.S. Department of State
- Travel advisories: The U.S. Department of State currently lists Tajikistan as
Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution). - Border Region & GBAO: For the GBAO region (due to potential local unrest) and specifically for the border with Afghanistan (Wakhan Corridor, Days 3–5 of this tour), the warning level is even “Reconsider Travel.” U.S. citizens should be aware that they will be driving within sight of Afghanistan for several days. The border is heavily guarded by the military, but the security situation in Afghanistan remains unpredictable.
International Health Insurance & Medical Evacuation
- Lack of Infrastructure: There is no medical care in the entire Pamir Mountains that meets Western or U.S. standards. Hospitals in Khorog and Murghab are extremely basic.
- Evacuation insurance: U.S. citizens should urgently purchase private travel health insurance that explicitly covers medical evacuation by helicopter (Medical Evacuation Insurance). Should severe altitude sickness or an accident occur in Jarty Gumbez (Day 5, 4,100 m elevation), transportation to Dushanbe or a third country (e.g., Dubai or Istanbul) is extremely expensive and logistically complicated.
Strict Ban on Drones and Photography
- Drone Ban: Many U.S. tourists like to bring photography drones with them. In Tajikistan, drones are strictly prohibited without prior, complicated authorization from the State Security Committee (GKNB). Illegal drones are confiscated at the border or at checkpoints, and heavy fines may be imposed.
- Photography Restrictions: Photographing military installations, bridges, checkpoints, and—in particular—border posts or military activities on the Afghan side of the river is strictly prohibited.
Strict laws governing medications and drugs
- Importing Medications: Tajikistan has extremely strict laws regarding narcotics. Many prescription medications commonly used in the U.S. (e.g., strong painkillers, ADHD medications such as Adderall/Ritalin, or certain sleep aids) may fall under the Narcotics Act. U.S. visitors must carry all medications in their original packaging and be able to present a doctor’s note in English.
- Zero Tolerance: Illegal drugs or incidents involving alcohol can result in draconian prison sentences.
No U.S. Consular Assistance for Dual Citizens
- Dual Nationality: If any members of the group hold dual U.S.-Tajik citizenship (or have ethnic roots there), Tajikistan does not recognize U.S. citizenship within its borders. In the event of legal problems or arrests, the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe is often denied consular access to these individuals.
